What parenthood looks like

by Alisa Bowman on June 6, 2010

I came across this old photo—taken a few months after our daughter was born—when I was consolidating photos from one computer onto another. It sums up my feelings about the first two years of parenthood.

I napped all day every Sunday for the first two years of parenthood, too. It was the only time I could “catch” up on sleep.

I would say that photo epitomizes parenthood…at least in the early years. Somewhere, I have a photo of me and my middle child when she was about 2. We were both sick and in our pajamas with greasy hair and I have a big cold sore on my lip. A real Kodak moment. LOL :)

My first daughter was amazing so was my second. Slept through the night almost from the day they came home. My son had colic and I walked the floors with him listening to Anne Murray’s album “Hippo in the bathtub”. We wore out 3 copies before he finally settled down and could sleep. It set the tone for their lives. Both daughters were always able to amble off to bed by 9Pm even as teen agers, my son—— I used to steal the light bulbs out of his lamp to get him to sleep. He now works the night shift as a guard.

Sassygirl, I am now 52 years old so I am seeing it nostalgically but I wouldn’t have traded it for any other life. Good luck to you!!

@ Joanne. Too funny. I think Alisa put that there just for us…ha! I love this pic Alisa. While I never had kids myself I ended up with two steps & now a grandson in my marriage. I recall many times when my step daughter was a teen that caused a few sleepless nights. I think it was God’s payback for all the trouble I gave my parents when I was a teen….lol
My oldest brother had his first kid & she slept through the night from the day they brought her home from the hospital. They thought “hey this was easy, lets have another”. Wouldn’t you know he was colicy his ENTIRE infancy. I don’t think either of them got a decent nights sleep for a year lol. :-)

Yeap, it sure does. Sleepless nights, so sleep during the DAY.

That’s hysterical. We have photos of me like that; my mom calls them blackmail photos:)

It’s so hard, isn’t it? I’m in the thick of that right now, with my 7-month-old who is sleeping beside me as I write this.
