Earlier this week, I wrote about the importance of giving. But I’ve been thinking. What stops me from giving more? Why don’t I give more often?
I know the answer. It’s this. I feel as if I can’t make a difference. The world has too many problems. The problems are too big. What can one person do?
Then Sanna Lavalle, a regular reader here, sent me this video. She’s the lungs that you hear in the background. She recorded it in a hotel room, with a microphone set up on an ironing board. Let me tell you: the woman’s got talent. Sanna: you can send me your music anytime, k? I will listen. I love your lungs.
This video brought tears to my eyes, though, because it shows how powerfully one small idea can spread and eventually help an entire nation of people. We can all make a difference. Never doubt that.

You know Alisa, I used to feel the same way you did. What difference could I make in someones life. Really, I didn’t think I could make a difference.
It was Thanksgiving 2003 when K-Love was doing a fundraising drive to feed the homeless. As I drove to work I remember praying to God asking Him what could I do. At that moment it hit me. I had to donate something. As I drove down the highway, my heart beating unusually fast, I called in to donate to our local rescue mission. It was something.
It’s been 6 years since that day and giving/volunteering is part of our family mission. We serve others because we are fortunate to have. What I have come to realize over the last 6 years is we, my family, make a difference every day in our community. We visit the San Diego Rescue Mission (SDRM) to talk to those who are getting off the streets and substance abuse, we serve at the Salvation Army, we pack food for those in Haiti, Tanzania, and San Diego. We serve because we are called to.
One of the most amazing things that has happened over the years is to watch my kids get fired up to serve or give. Last month when I was going to the SDRM my 4 year old daughter gave me $1 and a hand drawn picture for the Rescue Mission’s Women and Children’s Center. She gave all she had to help those who had nothing. I’ll tell you it brought tears to my eyes.
I could tell you many stories of the lives we are changing every day, but instead I would ask folks to go and do something. It’s amazing what 1 person can do.
