Rumors of My Relationship with Russell Crowe Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

by Alisa Bowman on January 17, 2010

While I’m confessing all of my secrets, I figured I might as well come out of the closet about this Russell Crowe thing, too.

About a week ago, I posted a status update on Facebook, saying that Russell Crowe had just sent me a friend request. I wasn’t sure whether I should accept, though.

For one, I wasn’t sure the friendship request was really from Russell. I have a long and sordid relationship with various celebrities on Facebook. You can read more about that here. It occurred to me that some 18-year-old troll might be trying to get his jollies off, tricking me into thinking that the real Russell wanted to be my friend.

My Facebook friends, however, accused me of being insecure. They told me that, of course, Russell knew who I was. Of course, he read my blog. Of course he wanted to be my Facebook friend. Why wouldn’t he?

One friend wrote:

I think sometimes we don’t know how to accept success when it hits us over the head. Maybe we aren’t Hemmingway or Ansel Adams, but you are a success. Accept and enjoy.

Another told me succinctly: Alisa – you’re a rock star!

So, feeling self-important and downright Famous By Association, I decided to accept Russell’s gesture of friendship. I clicked through to the friendship request. It was then that I noticed something I had not noticed before.

It was not a friendship request. It was a friend suggestion.

Russell didn’t want to be my friend. Someone else–no doubt someone who’d read my blog post about friending celebrities–thought I’d want to be friends with Russell.

This wee little mistake of mine? It embarrasses me. I almost didn’t tell anyone about it, for fear that you would all laugh at me and tell me that I should have known better.

Should I have kept it a secret?

I’d friend Hugh Jackman over Russell Crowe in a heartbeat, but that wasn’t what you asked us.

I say in these self-confessional times in which we live, why not reveal your secrets online? As embarrassing admissions go, this one’s pretty tame. But then we writers often keep our really deep, dark secrets to ourselves, don’t we? Just speculating, mind you…

You tell us everything else, why would you keep this secret? LOL!!!

So you made a mistake. I’m sure this wasn’t the biggest mistake of your life.

I’ve done this a couple of times, too. It was embarassing at the time. So, thank you for sharing because now I know that I’m not the only one who has done this.

This was no big deal at all. I think you should be feeling rather smug that Russell Crowe *might* actually be your friend. ;)

Correction – That should read “*might*… want to be your friend.”

Russell Crowe? Too much hair. Alisa, we need a post about the hormones that create sexy bald men …

Alexandra–funny. I’ve always loved bald men. Michael Jordon. Andre Agassi (when he was bald and not when he had the big mop). You name it. And it seems as if most of the men in my life are just terrified of losing their hair. That’s all I hear from them — how their hair is thinning blah blah blah. I keep telling them that bald men are sexy, but they apparently think I’m kidding. I am so NOT kidding. I think a poll is in order. Thanks for the idea!

This is great! I don’t think you should be embarrased at all. I think I would have friended Russell – he looks really good in the new Robin Hood movie :)

Just to make you feel better, I’m completely obsessed with the show True Blood, so much so, I visit and participate on its online fan network and am even known to watch those scene montages that people make on Youtube with too much time on their hands (though clearly I have too much time on my hands if I’m sitting and watching them!)

I agree with your friends comment. “I think sometimes we don’t know how to accept success when it hits us over the head. Maybe we aren’t Hemmingway or Ansel Adams, but you are a success. Accept and enjoy.”
So next question is did you befriend him? and did he reply?

Also I agree with the post idea about balding. (I keep insisting to my husband to shave his head)and he says NO. I will keep trying though!

Thanks for adding me as a friend
