Great post. My mum ALWAYS said "No, its extravagant" to every request. I was never bought anything, to the point when for my 14th birthday my father took me to the local bakery and told me i could pick out what i wanted, i choose a sandwich and was very pleased!! He meant any cake, but didn't let on, and I really enjoyed that sandwich.
Granted, I grew up in NZ so life was pretty sweet anyway.

oh, this had me rolling. it's so familiar.

when i hear those famous commercial words come out of the girls mouths it cracks me up.

ems has been trying to get me some betty crocker cake decorating tips from the tv and the aqua globes.

she's been REALLY bugging me for the SNUGGIES, but i just can't bear to all look like a family of monks or cultists.

We do like you the girls earn change for chores or good deeds, but they get those little glass beads that go in vases and then they trade them in once a week for 10 cents each.

Then we also have the give, save, spend jars that we do as a family though. Then we donate at the end of the year and do something special for ourselves.

I cannot stand the gimmes though and like you have pulled the "some kids don't have....clothes, baths, food, parents, houses to live in" (am i now my mother).

Part of it is that advertisers and retailers are consciously marketing to children as young as four. That was one of the reasons we decided to throw away our TV...

Have you tried the spend, save, donate jars? One of my nieces is a major spender, so my sister has her divide up her allowance in to a spend jar, a save jar, and a donation jar. I think it helps ... some.

When we coughed up what cash we could afford for her recent birthday, with the idea she would save it toward the Nintendo DS she wanted, she announced that Dad had given her the rest of the money she needed and already had it.

*sigh*

She once tried the quarter trick on me:

"Do you have a quarter?" she asked.

"Yes." I replied, honestly, not knowing her ploy.

"Yea! I can have a piece of candy." she chirped.

In classic mom-style, my sis said, "Auntie didn't say you could have the quarter."

Ha!

Oh, lord, does this post bring up memories! I never learned to be consistent enough to say no 75 times a day; often I just bought a little silence.

:::sigh::: Been there, done that. It's such a battle that I actually never go to stores EVER. I have everything delivered--even the groceries. Saves me a lot of headaches.
